The difference between ternary lithium battery and polymer lithium battery

2022-01-07

The difference between ternary lithium battery and polymer lithium battery

1. Materials

The positive electrode material of polymer lithium ion battery is divided into lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganate, ternary material and lithium iron phosphate material. The negative electrode is graphite, and the working principle of the battery is basically the same. The important difference between the positive electrode materials for polymer lithium ion batteries is the difference in electrolytes. Liquid lithium ion batteries use liquid electrolytes, while polymer lithium ion batteries are replaced by solid polymer electrolytes. This polymer can be dry or glued. In the current state, most of the polymer gel electrolytes are currently used.

The cathode material of the ternary lithium battery uses the ternary cathode material of nickel cobalt manganate or lithium nickel cobalt aluminate. The ternary composite cathode material is nickel salt, cobalt salt, manganese salt as raw materials, and nickel cobalt The ratio of manganese can be adjusted according to the actual situation. The battery with ternary material as the positive electrode has high safety related to lithium cobalt oxide battery, but the voltage is too low.

2. Performance

Performance characteristics of polymer lithium battery: more flexible design, higher mass-to-energy ratio, wider electrochemical stability window, higher safety and reliability, longer cycle life, slower capacity decay, higher volume utilization, and higher internal resistance Small, lighter, and less self-discharge.

Performance characteristics of ternary lithium battery: In terms of safety, it is safer than lithium cobalt oxide battery, but lower than lithium iron phosphate battery. Among all current commercial lithium-ion batteries, the safety is at a medium level and needs to be improved; In terms of energy density, it far exceeds lithium cobalt oxide batteries, lithium manganese oxide batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries; on the voltage platform, its monomer has an absolute advantage, 3.7V, while lithium iron phosphate is 3.2V, and lithium titanate is 2.3V.

Disadvantages of polymer lithium batteries: high production costs, difficult to purify the electrolyte system, need to protect the circuit control, prevent overcharge and discharge, destroy the reversibility of the internal chemical substances of the battery, and seriously affect the life.

Disadvantages of ternary lithium battery: poor high temperature resistance, limited number of cycles, poor high-power discharge, toxic elements, high-power charging and discharging, the temperature is very easy to rise, and the release of oxygen after high temperature is easy to burn.
